A well-developed industrial and agricultural region of Russia. In 2019 regional investment exceeded 299 billion roubles.

Its economy is led by metallurgy, metal fabrication and machine-building, alongside the production of electricity, gas and water, transport, communications and mining. The region works more than 200 mining and processing enterprises and over 650 mineral deposits, with significant reserves of iron, copper and zinc ore, a qualified workforce, low fabrication costs and a strong record of innovation. Exports centre on metals and metal products, chemicals and minerals.
